The Breakup Guide: Poncey-Highland Edition

Breaking up is hard to do…

Everyone has been through the pain of a breakup, and we all cope in different ways. I like to cut back on drinking, get plenty of sleep and eat healthy. (And if you believe that, then you don’t know me at all.) Many things can ease a broken heart, but surely we can all agree that booze and sugar help. And personally, when I’m down in the dumps, the last thing I want to do is get behind the wheel. As such, below are my favorite spots in the Poncey-Highland area for healing a broken heart. And by healing, I mean overindulging in food and alcohol.

Manuel’s Tavern

First things first: DRINKS. Manuel’s is the quintessential neighborhood bar. It’s welcoming, comfortable, warm and friendly, which makes it a great place to find an empty barstool, drink away your sorrows and strike up a conversation with the person next to you. Hopefully that person will be single and attractive.  And funny.  And smell good.

The Righteous Room

Oh, Righteous Room. How I love you so. You’re sufficiently dark, smoky, filled with friendly faces, and the badass musical selection on your jukebox doesn’t hurt either. Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Mak’er” and a steady stream of PBR’s should have any broken-hearted soul feeling fine in no time. “Oh oh oh oh oh oh, you don’t have to go-oh…”

Java Vino

Okay, so you can’t spend the ENTIRE break up in drunken debauchery. For a nice glass of wine or smooth cup of coffee, Java Vino is the place. Nestle in with your laptop and flirt with the cutie in the glasses.

King of Pops

What could possibly cheer a gal up more than a popsicle? A popsicle sold buy a tall blond, perhaps?  Done.  As most of Atlanta is well aware, The King of Pops sets up shop all over town including my little neck of the woods at the corner of North Avenue and North Highland. For a mere $2.50 you get heaven on a stick. And it doesn’t hurt that the King himself is quite heavenly. Siiiiigh.

The Atlanta Cupcake Factory

Brace yourself, because I’m about to impart a great, solemn truth upon you: some problems can only be solved with frosting. A broken heart is merely one of them. Basically, cupcakes and their healing frosting are solving problems all over the world…and right here in my little ‘hood at Atlanta Cupcake Factory, where the cupcakes are like portable little problem solvers, if you will. I find the Chocolate Salted Caramel cupcake especially peace-inducing.

Super Pan Latino Sandwich Shop

Perhaps it occurs to you that the only nourishment you’ve had in days is alcohol and sugar, and you’re STILL in need of post-breakup comfort. Well, what’s more comforting than pork belly? Nothing. That’s what. Super Pan has the most sinful, luxurious pork sandwich of all. Pork belly, cilantro, Sambal, tamarind sauce, and the kicker…a steamed coconut bun. Oh my, is it delectable!  And it should provide the necessary nutrients to support the next round of drinks. Righteous Room, anyone?
